I’m trying to keep my address book and other stuff up to date, so if everybody could just join Plaxo and connect with me, that would be great; thank you.
What is it?
Plaxo is a service that automatically syncs and shares your address book, calendar, tasks and notes. By connecting with plaxo users, your address book is never outdated.
Plug-ins allow you to connect and sync with MS Outlook, Apple address book and iCal, Gmail, Live Mail, Yahoo, LinkedIn,.. and even your mobile phone.
Plaxo is also a social networking site. It allows you to find people you might know by searching for old classmates & colleagues, browsing your friends connections and you can join groups where you can meet people with similar interest.
The Plaxo Pulse shares content from websites like Flickr, Twitter, Digg, your blog… so you can track what your contacts are doing.
What exactly is it doing?
Plaxo combines syncing address book & calendar information and social networking. All the information is updating on the fly.
Unlike other similar social networking services, you have control over what’s private between some or all contacts and what’s public.
The news feed is similar to the one on Facebook but is not only based on the Plaxo data, it includes third party data.
Look and feel
The Plaxo web interface is a clean, bright interface with a minimum of color, mostly blue. Navigation is simple, 4 tabs define the categories: Pulse, People, Calendar and My profile. There is sub-navigation and sidebars that help you filter the content or quickly access features.
On your mac, Plaxo creates a menu bar icon and is added to the system preferences. You find it in your Address Book, iCal and Mail. It’s perfectly integrated, you hardly notice it’s there.
If used with Outlook, there is a toolbar added and it interacts with your address book and inbox, again perfectly integrated.
Registration and pricing
To use Plaxo, you have to register. You can register with your e-mail address or your OpenID. Registration is simple and fast.
After registering, you can set up sync points and import data.
Plaxo is a free service, supported by advertising. There is the ability to create a premium account for $49.95/year, with a 30 day free trial.
Why use it?
Plaxo is suitable for professional use, especially with it syncing features. This comes in handy when you work on several computers.
Plaxo saves you time because it automatically keeps your address book up to date.
The Pulse feed stream is a great service if you and your contacts create a lot of content on several websites like Flickr, Twitter, Digg, Blogs,… .
